Odd houses in Hanoi

Narrow and crooked houses in Hanoi are considered “urban waste”. Though the local government has banned the construction of such houses, they are mushrooming along newly built roads in the capital city.

In early 2003, the first narrow and crooked houses grew along the new road of Dao Tan. Their weird shapes immediately caught public attention .

Nowadays, Hanoians are no longer surprised by such houses because they have appeared on many new roads, for instance Xa Dan, Le Van Luong, Khuat Duy Tien, Nguyen Trai and the foot of Vinh Tuy road.

Their owners do not want to live in such small houses (several square meters) but they don’t want to move either, because their houses’ fronts face the roads and are thus very favorable for business.

Hanoi’s Vice Chair Phi Thai Binh has told districts to check and make lists of narrow and crooked houses to report to the city before February 15. These houses will be cleared away. Only owners of houses that were built before 2005 will be compensated under the current regulations.

It is estimated that there are around 300 narrow and crooked houses in the city.

We captures some of them:

A narrow house at the foot of Vinh Tuy bridge.
This house is so small that there is not enough land to build foundations
strong enough to prop up the second storey.
This house is only three square meters but it serves as both a bakery and a drugstore.
A narrow house which is a café on Le Van Luong Road. The first floor has just enough room for one table.
Customers have to drink coffee on the pavement.
A narrow house on Truong Chinh road, which can contain a shelf only. The seller has to sit on the pavement.
A narrow house on Tay Son street.
