Vietnam Airlines extra flights for Tet

HCMC - Vietnam Airlines on Monday disclosed a plan to operate 850 more domestic flights during Tet, or Lunar New Year, to meet the surging demand for air travel during this biggest traditional holiday in Vietnam.

The national flag air carrier plans the extra flights mainly on the Hanoi-HCMC and HCMC-Danang routes from February 1 to 28, according to a statement the airline sent to the Daily. The Lunar New Year falls on February 14, but the holiday normally lasts one week or longer.

Vietnam Airlines intends to operate 562 more flights between Hanoi and HCMC in the period, and to add 288 flights on the HCMC-Danang route.

The additional seats will be 6,500-7,500 a day on the Hanoi-HCMC run, up 45-85% over normal days while the extra daily seats for the other route are 1,600-3,900, an increase of up to 65-120% compared to normal days.

During the last Tet holiday, Vietnam Airlines operated an additional 832 flights between Hanoi and HCMC, and HCMC and Danang, with the extra number of seats at 110,000 for the first route and 73,000 for the second.

The carrier also has plans to operate more flights from HCMC to Hue and Quy Nhon in the central region, Buon Ma Thuot and Pleiku in the Central Highlands region, and other destinations during Tet.

In October, Vietnam’s low-cost carrier Jetstar Pacific announced an increase of weekly flights between HCMC and Vinh by four to 11, and between HCMC and Haiphong by three flights to 10 from February 1 to 28 to meet the air travel demand for the holiday.
