Cold weather threats Hanoi’s peach village

Gardeners in Hanoi’s Nhat Tan village are sitting on fire because the cold spell is forecast to prolong,  which would mean a poor harvest of flowers.

Only three weeks before the lunar New Year are left, but Nhat Tan peach trees don’t blossom yet.

Meanwhile, kumquat trees have turned yellow to welcome the New Year.
Many people visit Nhat Tan village to take pictures and to buy kumquat trees.

Gardeners work to prepare their trees for the lunar New Year – the business season of Nhat Tan village.

In the cold weather, an old lady still works in her peach garden.

While kumquat growers are glad, peach planters are very worried.
A senior gardener said that if next week the weather is still cold,
peach trees may not blossom at all in time.
In the days before the lunar New Year, Nhat Tan villagers are very busy.
This gardener has never planted peach trees but this year, he experimentally
grafted wild peach with Nhat Tan peach, in the hope to create a new kind of peach this year.
Some peach trees in his garden have blossomed.
Some beds of peony in the peach garden.
